Treeve- would you send materials out for asbestos identification again now, knowing that doing so makes removing them have to follow protocol?

Thanks for the photo and explaination!

Chris, I've never seen a kid try to bite a windowsill, do you really remember doing it??

Ben,

With my current living situation, pregnant wife and 2 year old daughter (that probably has asthma), yeah i would send it off again.  In the end its only time and money.  Now, if i were a bachelor living on my own, let floor would have already been gone.  Grin

As linoleum tile?  Yeesh,  folks are sensitive these days! If it is in lino, you should be able to get underneath it, and remove it in big sections, as I did the last time I had to deal with it. As it is encased, with minimal fracturing of the matrix, there is limited exposure, no?
I worked a lot with asbestos when I was a teenager, casting dental prostheses, as sheet asbestos was used to line casting rings to minimize distortion if the wax patterns. We used to rip it off the rolls, dry and by hand. At 62, I have yet to see the effect of having done so, and am wondering if there is a predisposing sensitivity needed for the fibers to cause cell change, but one is never sure. Funny, the asbestos was changed out in the early or mid 70s for silicon based materials. Not sure if  silicosis or abestosis is worse? Used both a great deal.

Maybe good for the kids to visit grandparents for a bit while it is removed?

Yeah, its pretty crazy what used to pass as ok back in the day.  Asbestos is a pretty amazing material as long as it isn't stuck in your lungs.  There are 6 different varieties of asbestos, crocidolite is the real baddy that doesn't dissolve and sticks.  It was mostly used in insulation and ceiling tiles so chances are good that isn't the one your were playing with. This is what the fibers look like in your lung.  The body coats them in calcium and iron.

There were 4 "layers of flooring" in the kitchen.  Upper linoleum, lower linoleum, tile, and then hard wood.  We removed the upper linoleum since it was newer.   The lower linoleum and tile looked a bit sketchy and were of the right age for asbestos so we decided to be safe and send them out for testing.  If i was a betting man, i would have put the house on the tiles being positive.  Turns out the backing of the lower linoleum was the asbestos winner.  Its in good shape so the chance of exposure is lower, but since we sent it for testing and it came back positive, it is now a hazardous material.  $2k and 3 weeks later it will be disposed of by a specialist who will seal off the room with a big negative air filter and properly dispose of it.  An independent air hygienist will come in after to make sure there isn't anything floating around and if it passes, the room will be unsealed and the work can re-commence.  Ohh the joys of older houses.....  Cry

Thanks,

Now if I can stop cutting down trees, being a rock farmer, and repairing tractors and chippers, I can get to repairing and riding some other bikes, like my Hondas!

Sounds like you have gone a little country on us Ben  Grin

43  Motorcycle Stuff / Tips,Tricks, and Ideas / Re: Can I buy a (new) Motobatt locally? on: June 14, 2016, 11:38:09 AM
I purchased a mottobat for my 350f, it didn't even last a year.  Has at least one bad cell.  According to anders, they are cheap Chinese junk and fail due to vibration.  Based on my experience, i would have to agree.  I also purchased mine from amazon.
