Title: CB750K4 - new updates 05/02/2015 - new seat to fit K8 tank
Post by: andy750 on March 23, 2014, 04:24:38 PM
Ok its been a while but today was a great day for riding (running heated gloves/jacket liner with new alternator) ...and trying out the repainted K8 tank.

Now I just need some ideas for a seat - solo seat (police bike style) or stock double seat - thoughts? Opinions? Photoshop mock ups?? All appreciated :)

How it was before painting with K1 seat

Love the solo seat! You might want to contact this guys - http://www.ebay.com/usr/hondaclassic31

If you can score a rack similar to the one on the silver bike, it would be great!

What a weekend for riding! Too bad I had to work this weekend  :-\. However that didn't stop me riding the K4 all weekend - short commutes. Loving the new Euro spec K1 bars I just installed. Low sleek with a slightly forward lean. They are much better on the highway than the more sit-up right US spec K1 bars I had previously but perhaps not quite touring bars. They do however allow high speed jaunts on the highway with 85 comfortable with no wind push back - the air flows down the chest rather than against it.

Anyway yesterday I was in Medford after work visiting some ex-neighbours and I came back via I93 to Storrow to Boylston. All was going well until I felt gas running out on Storrow. No worries reserve till the Shell has station on Boylston. Filled up, went to start and it just turned over would catch  :'(. It was then that I noticed had pouring out of #1 overflow :(. It was dark, rain seemed imminent I just wanted to get home - a mere 4 miles away. I winged it on 3-cylinders, every time I stopped at a light gas would pour out....I had visions of the bike catching on fire and sunrise orange becoming flaming orange  8)

Needless to say I made it home, tapped the carbs with a big screwdriver and it was " fixed". Or so I thought this morning riding to work down Rt9. I looked at my speedo and happened to notice the lower right handlebar bolt was very loose. That's not good I thought and pulled over in 0.5 mile. It was then I noticed the gas pouring out #1 :(. Before I addressed that I checked all the handlebar bolts - they were ALL loose!! Oh dear :(. Lucky I always have my tool kit with me :).

Tightened them up rode to work testing the aerodynamics at speed for good measure. After work pulled the bowl cleaned it up reinstalled didn't leak and had a great ride home on the showers :)

And so finished the weekend on a good note. Moral of the story - always check your work afterwards! And sometimes unrelated bike issues can enlighten you to other more serious issues - be alert :)

Cheers
Andy

Glad not to find an article about you in the Globe, flaming orange indeed!

I didn't get but 10 miles in this weekend, but got some maintenance done on a couple of bikes. Going to get a couple inspected tomorrow hopefully.

Nice post, Andy. Glad you caught these "small" issues on time!

This is exactly the reason why I want to get my K5 ready and ride it as much as possible before I head to St' Louis.

Yes exactly! The carb issue may have been precipitated by the fact I was low on gas and going to reserve may have introduced some crap into the carbs.  However popping off the bowls and cleaning the bowls out seems to have resolved the issue but further testing required.

The bar issue is just an indication to check, re-check and check again all work!!

I posted this on the main forum but you guys are probably more knowledgeable  ;)

I am looking for info on this particular mirror shown in the link below

http://www.flickr.com/photos/iheartjulia/9607057964/#

and here

http://c2r-motorcycles.de/1984-honda-cb750-bol-dor/

I just changed my bars to Euro K1 bars and they are much lower profile. The OEM mirrors now look huge and bar end mirrors are good but I cant see a lot of info behind me like I do with the OEM. So looking for alternatives. The mirrors in the link above look like a good compromise but no idea what they are. Anyone?

thanks
Andy

I don't have any info on these mirrors, but I don't like them :P

Can we see pictures with the Euro K1 bars? How much do you want to spend on mirrors?

First ones you linked to are bar end mirrors - already have those but exploring other morre visible options.

#2 looks interesting and Ill look into that for how it looks on a bike.

#3 too short - I will see my elbow and no more ;)

Ill take a shot of the K2 bars this evening. They are very comfortable but maybe not for touring? Not sure on that yet. Its much more of a lean forward position, legs hugging the tank. Shorter legs would love rear sets with these bars.

thanks
Andy

Okay Andy.

I know the first one are bar ends, but these are larger than your average bar end mirrors. I would probably end up with one of these for my CB400F

I think I am going to try these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/motorcycle-scooter-mirror-round-chrome-8mm-Piaggio-Vespa-SYM-KYMCO-Honda-Suzuki-/390753894180?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item5afabf3f24

or

But maybe the second one is too modern looking...really wish I could find the ones in the original post ;)

I can't find those exact mirrors, but there are other Shinyo mirrors that are pretty cool…

http://www.louis.de/index.php?topic=brand&brand_id=353&lang=en

and at 30-60 Euros, bolt as expensive as I expected…

The mirrors in the original post are Shin Yo per some specifications listed about that build. I'll see if I can get a model name although Chris' search results look damn close.

Ah ok then they must be the AGILAs. only place that sell them though is Germany (not for road use as they are too small  -Germans and their regulations!).

Well that was interesting....I email the shop in Germany asking why I see Trinidad and Tobago, Montenegro etc on their country list but no USA -ah we dont ship to the US they reply too many regulations  :-\. While I consider having them ship to the UK (each mirror costs 26 euros!) I browse a little more for the x time. Its all German and Italian sellers....it must be good if these style gurus (well Italians anyway) are the only ones selling!! They UK have them as well but they are silly money.

So browsing and browsing for Shin Yo AGILA mirrors...looking on Google Images...wait..whats this..Highway Hawk AGILA mirrors? Jackpot! Of course the average American consumer would be mighty wary of buying from a company called Shin Yo but call it Highway Hawk - yes sign me up!! Indeed while the AGILA mirror is marketed in Europe to sportsbike riders, street fighters its marketed in the US to cruiser riders...and so I get a great deal from a custom cruiser website  8). Contrast this with an Ebay rip off store asking $120/mirror!! Unbelievable!

Now to see if they look good and actually function like a mirror!

Anyway all this reminds me of recent find that European helmets are made lighter than US helmets - for example Shoei GT-Air is 1757g for an XL in the US but 1520 g in the UK! Why!?

Something to think about on your way to work this morning ;)

Cuz european brains ain't as valuable as 'Merican ones. 'Merica! Ya!

I suspect they have to add something to the helmet to to pass the "stringent testing" to get the little DOT sticker on the back?

I think its the SNELL rating...adds weight to the helmet - in Europe they have an ECE rating not SNELL

In the quest for the perfect bar I got the OEM K1 bars (Euro spec not US spec) from DSS.

Here they are installed on the K4 - very comfortable at speed with wind running down the chest rather than at it. I am 6`4 with long arms and I have a slight lean forward. Low profile, no droop down of the bars like you have with the cheap Bikemaster euro bars.

New K4 updates - with Anders help I went down to CT today to pick up my new seat from Eddie Barret premier seat maker - seat was made to fit a custom pan so that the repainted K8 tank would fit on my K4 - yeah not complicated at all ;)

Here it is ready to roll

(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/andy750/IMG_2183_zpsuimwto0p.jpg) (http://s141.photobucket.com/user/andy750/media/IMG_2183_zpsuimwto0p.jpg.html)

Adding gas for the very first time to the K8 tank for my first ride of the year and first ride after knee surgery 7 weeks ago and first ride on new seat...all before a 2 hr ride...what could possibly go wrong!

(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/andy750/IMG_2188_zpsxb3uoqxm.jpg) (http://s141.photobucket.com/user/andy750/media/IMG_2188_zpsxb3uoqxm.jpg.html)

Made it home in good time on a beautiful Spring day

(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/andy750/IMG_2189_zpsnfgi0vb1.jpg) (http://s141.photobucket.com/user/andy750/media/IMG_2189_zpsnfgi0vb1.jpg.html)

very happy with the seat and how it fits in with the K8 tank -I also like the ribbed pattern on top
