Title: 2016 BIG FALL RIDE thread
Post by: Alan F. on September 11, 2016, 09:47:58 PM
2016 BIG FALL RIDE THREAD!

It's time to start thinking about getting together for one last (first maybe?) group ride of 2016.
In hopes of having a decent turn-out let's kick a few ride routes around, toss in a few possible dates and alternate dates.
We have members in all six New England states, maybe we can find riders to represent each state?
There are some epic roads out here, has anyone found anything new that might fit the bill?
What were the parameters? 100-200 miles? 5 hours round trip or less? Some other third thing?

Come on Team, let's ride this fall.

I was wondering how many of us are in touch with the members that don't visit this forum often or haven't in quite some time?
We have lots of members that were active in the past, maybe we could encourage them to check back in?
Maybe a phone call or an email could get them to come out for a ride?

As of now I'm not working on weekends, so I'd love to join.

I don't know if any of you are doing this, but I'll be participating in Distinguished Gentlemen's Ride this year, which is Sunday, 9/25.

On October 1 in Portsmouth, NH, there's a little gathering of bikes:

It might be fun to do a ride that ends in Portsmouth and go check out the show!

Might I suggest that when a destination is decided upon, maybe use Furkot to map the route because you can have it include Scenic Routes, Historic Markers, Natural Landmarks, etc.

I voted  8)

The usual 8am start..colder the better...no test for a New England biker like a Fall Ride  ;D Are you big poofs or what!!??   :D

Here are the dates I can make it:
8/9th October
22/23rd October
5th/6th November.

After this I will hopefully be zipping around Vietnam on a precarious moto  ;)

cheers
Andy

One thought for a destination is Vanilla Bean Cafe  - roads in this area are very good.

I'm good with that, but I'll rely on someone else to second the vote.
I'm tempted to ride the 5-State run afterward too. Maybe I can get up a group to go along.
If anyone heads up from the south or down from the north it'd sure be great to have the company.

I voted as well:)

Would certainly prefer a 9:00 AM start. The Vanila Bean Cafe is excellent destination.
I can make the exact dates Andy can. Slightly prefer 22/23rd October.
Looking forward to it!

So it looks like we've got 6 voters interested in mainly Mountains, Beer and Lunch.
The consensus is for a start time of 9am, ride of 100 to 200+ miles spanning 3 to 4 hours, breaking up around 2pm.

Mountains also work for me. A ride to Keene via Rt124 Mountain Road or Western Mass/Berkshires or NH Turnpike up to Lincoln or ?

Open to more ideas...whats the 5-state run?

Title: Re: 2016 BIG FALL RIDE thread

I would be happy to provide a perhaps central meeting point for departing and/ or returning to. Both Keane and the Bean are convenient destinations from Sterling, and a bbq here would be fun.

100 miles or so of back roads between the tri-state points of RI-CT-MA to the tri-state points of MA-NH-VT

Given that I have always organised the Fall Ride route I am going to step aside this year and wait for all the details to be posted  8). I want to simply turn up and ride  ;D. Anything is good for me and Ill be there if its on the days I indicated. So please post a route, a meeting place and a time to meet  ;)

The Vanilla Bean sounds like a good destination to me, my wife and I used to live in Hampton, CT and wound-up at the Vanilla Bean on occasion.

I've never been to the Bean and it's on my list so that sounds good to me!
Im also game for something else…
As Im the VT outlier I may have to meet you enroute…

I could do oct 7/8,
I could do oct 22/23
Nov 5/6…sure…if my driveway isn't ice by then.

My participation also depends on how much I am able to use my hands, which I will only be able to gauge when I wake up that morning.

It would be fun to ride with y'all,
Bethanie

Alan had sent me a route from Norwood to Pomfret yesterday to ask for my input. Perhaps he wouldn't mind if I posted it here. I would suggest using smaller routes instead of rt27. If Chris is participating, perhaps he can lead to start for a neat way to go.
I would also suggest 31 instead of 169 where ever possible. Also 62 is a faster choice than 117, should you decide to go that way.

Shared route
From 164 Nahatan Street to 450 West Road via MA-27 N.

My initial thought was that would be closer to 5 hours via that route which is doable, if go 3 hours pre-lunch, 2.5-3 hours post lunch, then everyone home.
The time/distance formula is generally increased by a 1.5 time factor as soon as theres 3 rider or more...

One nice thing about Alan's route is that us folks along the way can hop on. I agree with your time estimate Chris. Should we try a week from Saturday, pending the weather report the day before?

Title: Re: 2016 BIG FALL RIDE thread
Post by: Alan F. on September 30, 2016, 03:06:37 PM
At this point I'm good with Saturday the 8th.
I'll do some testing, but I dont think I have a device that supports custom routes.

Title: Re: 2016 BIG FALL RIDE thread
Post by: frostypuck on October 02, 2016, 07:05:59 PM
Maybe try saving a google map of the route to google drive?
Alternately, I can download furkot maps routes to my bike garmin, but its unlikely i can do any saturday trip...

Let's make it for when the most folks who want to go can do so. It certainly can be on a Sunday.

Ok which day of this weekend are we riding? Saturday or Sunday. need to make plans....thanks. If you can post a GPX file that would be great!

looking forward to it - going to be a great weekend for riding.

Who is in/out??

Andy

I'm in for either Saturday 8th October or Sunday the 9th.
Right now forcast shows a chance of rain Saturday which is likely to change as the day approaches.

None of my testing has produced any positive results for using a google maps custom route on my phone. My cheap Garmin doesn't support the upload of custom routes either.

I'm in! Either day!

Alan, if you can send me the route on google maps, I will try to find some time to convert it to GPX. No promises though. It has been crazy busy at work lately! Don't even mention after work!

Looking forward to it!

Here ya go ..

Not sure why do we have to start at the Norwood diner, since Chris is not coming, Alan is coming from Haverhill, Ben is in Sterling (on route), Andy is in Roslindale and I'm in Newton. Well, besides tradition. But, I have been breaking traditions lately, so if you don't mind, I would meet you at the Sunoco Gas Station on route 27 in Maynard, just before the intersection with route 30. All you have to set up is date and time:)

Cheers,
Peter

I think you mean Wayland, not Maynard.

I afraid I can't join you all, as I'm frantically getting ready to head out to California (by plane, not bike), for the concert of the century, followed by a week of tooling around out there with my girlfriend. Plus I'm in the middle of buying a house in Groton. But have fun!

Hi to all. Got a call from Alan saying this Saturday was a go with Alan, Peter P., and Andy into making it. I see 25 percent chance of rain on AccuWeather, 40 percent on My Cast for Saturday, although it's too early yet to say what the hour by hour forecast is.
Should we make  call when we see what things look early on Saturday morning?  With any luck, it will be a reasonable day, but if it appears that it will be a really dreary day, perhaps we should consider a rain date at that time?
Anybody else interested in going?

Rob are you coming over?

Thanks Andy, I was looking forward to an opportunity to hang with you!
I wish Anders could make it, I know he would if he could, and I will write Mike Rieck. to see if I might twist his arm as well.

Shall we try to write into this site tomorrow evening or very early on Saturday to give folks a heads up, call each other, or say that we'll meet regardless?

As far as meeting, will you be heading towards Hopkinton, then towards Upton on Hopkinton Rd, headed toward the Central Turnpike and Oxford and Webster before crossing into CT? If not, and you're following Alan's route going west on 117, why don't we meet in Clinton at Coffeelands? Otherwise, please let me know your route, and I will find a place to meet you.
Looking forward to this!

ok, so this epic ride is tomorrow, Saturday?
Is the route still the link posted earlier by Ben, that passes through Princeton, MA?
I could meet along the route…Don't think I can make it to Boston tonight.
Meeting in Princeton, MA is probably closest to me.
What time are you starting?
ETA for Princeton?

So, are we riding or not? Saturday or Sunday? What time? Which route? It's four of us, five with Bethanie. It shouldn't be that hard!
Alan, you are in charge, correct? Pick a day, pick a route and pick a meeting place. I cannot decide on Saturday morning. I have other things to do this weekend. Obviously Ben cannot make it Sunday, so let's ride tomorrow. So what if it rains? We all have rain gear, don't we?

I will make one last suggestion, and then I am out.

Why don't we all meet at the Mountainside Market in Princeton tomorrow at whatever time you want. It is (almost) on the route planned and we can all get there regardless of where we are coming from.

There...

Here's the plan:

10am Saturday, 8th October we all meet up at Mountainside Market 23 Hubbardston Road Princeton, MA http://www.mountainsidemarket.com/ (http://www.mountainsidemarket.com/)
This location is pretty much central to all of us, and known to a few of us for good coffee and pastries.
Likely a restroom as well.

Then it's kickstands up and we're off on some entertaining roads and eventually south to the Vanilla Bean Café for lunch http://www.thevanillabeancafe.com/ (http://www.thevanillabeancafe.com/)

Remember to arrive with full tanks, oil and tires topped up as well.

It was a chilly start to the ride for Peter and myself as we left Roslindale. Mist was heavy and wet as we sped along the Dover road heading to Princeton via alll back roads. The XR650L loved the twisty empty roads! A quick 1hr 50 min later (after 2 gas stops for the small 2L tank) and we were pulling into Mountainside Cafe, Princeton and saw Bethanies Versys was parked prominently out front and Bens FJ 1100 in the back.

Before long old Peter pulled quietly in on the Guzzi...

The XR650L did great today -loved the twisty roads

Thanks Alan for leading down Rt 31 and thanks Peter and Bethanie for the ride.

It was the quintessential Fall day for a very good ride!

cheers

Some folks will say probably my better half Chris, in more ways than one, as I lost more than Martha weighs. The hard part is not gaining it back!

What's your secret Ben?
The last time I lost a bunch of unsightly weight I needed to find a new apartment, no danger of me gaining that back though.  :D

Great to see everyone again, and thank you all for the ride!
It was a gorgeous day for it!
Thanks Andy for posting report and pics!
What a great area of CT too, Im looking forward to exploring more.
I had a grey and misty ride back to VT winding along some lovely country roads.

Great to see you as well B, albeit very briefly! I purchased a new tire yesterday to replace the curiously damaged one that put me out. Wish I didn't have to work today, have a great ride Alan!
